About the Japan-America Counseling Center ・ ・ ・
Hamilton-Madison House, Japanese Clinic

The Japan-America Counseling Center was established in 1983 as the mental health division of Hamilton-Madison House, a 120-year-old non-profit social welfare organization, when few Japanese counselors were available. The Center has been helping Japanese people in New York City with their mental health issues.

The Center is the only New York State-accredited mental health clinic for Japanese, and its two native Japanese-speaking psychotherapists provide 2,400 cases of psychotherapy annually. The center's psychiatrists work closely with the center's resident psychiatrist to provide a complete treatment system and can prescribe medications for those who need them.

Patient Testimonials
  • The Japan America Counseling Center is my lifeline.
  • When I was depressed and losing hope because I was not getting involved with people, they were the only ones who listened to me seriously, took an interest in me and listened hard.
  • While I was living abroad on a single assignment, stressed and feeling that my job was in jeopardy, I went to the center to find a way to balance myself together and life became easier.
The Center has dealt with a variety of problems over the years. Examples of major problems include anxiety, panic attack disorder, interpersonal problems, depression, bulimia, sleep disorders, and schizophrenia. Our patient population includes Japanese expatriates, students, single elderly people, and people with serious illnesses.

Activities of the Center

・ Volunteered for two weeks there during the Hanshin Awaji Earthquake for mental care
・ Provided free mental health care for Japanese people after 9/11 with financial support from JCCI
・ After the Great East Japan Earthquake

The Center received the Consul General's Commendation in 2012 for its contribution to the Japanese community.
We need your support....

Our center is chronically underfunded due to the worsening economic environment, and is in danger of not being able to continue for the next fiscal year. We continue to strive to minimize the financial burden on our clients by providing a place where they can receive professional counseling in their own language in a foreign country.

We hope that you will support and cooperate with our activities.
