Japan Gallery "Western Beauty and Japanese Craftsmanship" Exhibition

November 17 （ Friday ）, one-day exhibition （ admission free ）. Enjoy the world of shadowboxes, the three-dimensional art of light and shadow, and modern ・ jewelry.

Modern ・ jewelry, which uses many gemstones such as diamonds, sapphires, and rubies, was prized in Europe and other Western countries and has been widely popular in Japan since the Meiji period (1868-1912), and shadowboxes, which are called the three-dimensional art of light and shadow. Although they fall into two completely different genres, jewelry and crafts, they both require the kind of detailed handwork in which the Japanese excel, and both jewelry ・ design and shadowbox making have become established hobbies for art lovers in Japan.

This exhibition will feature the work of jewelry ・artist ・Ozawa Koji, who has been working in the jewelry industry in Yamanashi Prefecture, the largest jewelry production area in Japan, since he was 18 years old and has 27 years of experience as a craftsman. He has been working in the field of jewelry for over 20 years.

We will also introduce shadowboxes, an art form in which a pattern is cut out and pasted over and over to create a three-dimensional effect and a sense of depth, giving it new life. Shadowboxes originated from "decoupage," which was popular among European noblewomen in the 17th century. Later, it was introduced to the U.S. and rearranged to its present form, in which a three-dimensional picture is placed in a frame. Kanae Ohashi （ is one of the leading artists who introduced this "art of light and shadow" to Japan 30 years ago. This exhibition will feature a wide range of paintings created into three-dimensional forms, from well-known themes such as "The Tale of Genji" and "The Fifty-three Stages of the Tokaido" to the pop comic ・ art of his son, painter/illustrator Koji Ohashi （ ）.

Through a three-way fusion of art culture originating overseas, traditional Japanese craftsmanship, and the latest pop culture ・ trends, this exhibition explores the appeal of the Japanese sense that has supported the recent global boom in Japanese culture.
