Japan Gallery Saeri Kiriya Exhibition "Beyond Borders

Crossing Borders" is a 60-minute long, three-channel video, photo, collage, and painting installation piece.

In the spring of 2016, while a visiting artist at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, contemporary artist Saeri Kiriya interviewed a total of 16 men and women who came from abroad with hopes and dreams, overcoming various difficulties, to put their life potential on the line in Vienna. Beyond Borders is a 60-minute long, three-channel video, photo, collage, and painting installation piece. The exhibition will be held with the cooperation of three large monitors from Sony Corporation.

Vienna, the city of gold, the city of art, the city of music. Historically, it is a city with a rich international flavor. A total of 16 men and women ( from Afghanistan, Iran, Ghana, Korea, Kosovo, Syria, Sweden, Serbia, China, Germany, Japan, Palestine, Mexico, students, immigrants, or refugees ) have come to Vienna with hopes and dreams, overcoming various difficulties, and putting their life possibilities on the line. Refugees were interviewed and asked mainly about their homelands. He asked them mainly about their homeland: "What is your name ? Where do you come from ? … What is your favorite city in your country ? …" and so on. What Mr. Kiriya felt after the interview was people's sense of nostalgia. In Vienna, you see all kinds of buildings and paintings decorated in gold. New York is famous for its art ・deco architecture, and buildings like the Rockefeller ・ Center and the Chrysler Building are covered in gold. And Kanazawa, my hometown and the city I always miss and fondly remember, is also famous for its gold leaf. I created this video while keeping in mind the golden brilliance common to all three capitals.
