While waiting in a tavern for his beloved opera singer Stella, the poet Hoffmann recounts his itinerant search for the ideal woman, begged by his friends. German-born Jacques ・ Offenbach, who composed many popular operettas in Paris, wrote this great opera at the end of his life. The storyline is engrossing, and the music is light and hauntingly beautiful. Some of the music may be familiar to you. In addition to the leading tenor, there are four sopranos, four baritones who are villains, and an important mezzo ・ soprano in men's clothing. The non-singing artistic supporting cast adds interest to the stage. The stage production is by Bartlett ・ Sher, a master of orthodoxy.
