Mr. Futamura moved from Kyushu to the United States in 1965 at age 31. As a young man, he was forced to abandon his passion for painting because he could not find the time to paint, but he never gave up his desire to learn. Although Mr. Futamura had no formal art education, the Museum of Fine Arts in New York was his art school. He was particularly drawn to and inspired by the works of contemporary painters at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

But it was the diverse natural beauty of Central Park and the energy of its people that inspired him most. Hours of observation, sitting, strolling, experiencing the beauty, and enjoying the scent of new flowers each year inspired his paintings. Futamura's work is inspired by nature, but instead of depicting actual plants and animals as we know them, his paintings are surrealistic, abstract interpretations of what we see around us.

Color is a major influence on Futamura's artistic pursuits. Understanding how the colors of paint look on canvas has been a quest Futamura has undertaken for the past several years. He has immersed himself in color research, testing the vibrations and intonations of color to find the components that create the perfect warm blacks that recur in many of his works. He continued his quest until he arrived at a quiet, calm, and harmonious palette. Through the evolution of his own work, he developed a unique style from a variety of sources and went on to create the surreal, abstract images that are part of this exhibition.

Utilizing a unique painting technique with a base of jusso and sand and brightly colored acrylic paint, he created hundreds of abstract paintings over the years. This exhibition will feature approximately 30 of his paintings, carefully selected from among them. Mr. Futamura is very grateful to be able to show his work publicly for the first time and to share it with you at this stage of his creative journey. We hope you will enjoy viewing and cheering on the work of Mamoru Nimura, a budding artist at the age of 88.
