最新O-1ビザ情報!What makes a good O-1 recommendation letter for any type of O-1 case.

In my June 21, 2018 O-1 article, I discussed the main differences between the two types of O-1 visas, O-1A and O-1B, and explained why it is important to choose the right one for each O-1 application. In this article, I will discuss what makes a good O-1 recommendation letter for any type of O-1 case. This is important, because recommendations from experts or authorities in the field of activity that the O-1 candidate is engaged in, whether business, technology, science or the arts, are crucial to the success of any O-1 application.

What makes a good O-1 letter?
First, of course, the expert or authority submitting the letter must show why he or she is qualified to give an opinion about the O-1 candidate’s achievements and why that person deserves to be approved for O-1. Therefore, the person writing the recommendation letter needs to outline his or her own background and experience in the field.

This should normally be done right at the beginning of the recommendation letter, and of course, should mention that his or her resume/CV is attached. In addition, the letter writer should also mention any awards, prizes or other recognition that he or she has received, and he or she may even want to attach one or two press articles about his or her accomplishments. However, information about the recommender’s own accomplishments should be concise and not take up too much space, because the main focus of the letter should be on the achievements of the person who is asking for O-1, not the person who is recommending him or her.

What should the O-1 letter actually say about the O-1 candidate? I will begin by listing a few things that the recommendation letter should not say and that could actually detract from the impact and effectiveness of the letter. I have seen less than helpful statements such as the following in all too many O-1 recommendations that have been prepared without proper legal advice.

First, some recommendation letters I have seen state that the O-1 candidate (especially if the candidate is a recent school graduate with only a few years of experience in his or her field after graduation) has shown a great deal of ability and will most likely do great things and win wide recognition in the future.
This kind of statement, no matter how well meaning and sincere, should be avoided at all costs, because immigration examiners assume that this means that the O-1 candidate has not accomplished anything important up to now.
That is not the way to get an O-1 case approved, because O-1 depends on showing that the candidate has already achieved recognition and distinction for his or her accomplishments. The fact that he or she may show great promise of doing this in the future is normally of little value. The emphasis should be on what the person has already accomplished at the time of submitting the O-1 application.

Does this mean that relatively young people or recent school graduates have no chance of being approved for O-1? It does not mean that at all, so long as the candidate can show actual achievements and recognition in his or her field after graduation from school. (Awards or prizes by the school itself while the person was a student will normally not be given much weight.)

For example, a talented musician might perform as a soloist with a major orchestra and receive favorable reviews soon after graduation from music school. In such a case, being young and early in one’s career should not be an obstacle to receiving O-1 approval. The same might be true of an expert in technology or business who accomplishes something of major significance in his or her field at any age, no matter how young. But the emphasis must always be on what the person has accomplished, and recognition gained before applying for O-1. I will continue with this topic in my next article.
